Several locals on 2A SPL baseball team

ALAMOSA – The Class 2A All-Southern Peaks League baseball team was released in June with 14 players from the San Luis Valley being honored.

League champion Monte Vista had the most selections with five. Three of them were first team players including Player of the Year Kaden Mellott, Azaraiah Hurtado and Kobe Jiron. Jeremiah Baumgardner and Kaden Madrid were both second team selections.

Mellott led the Pirates in batting with a .387 average. He had six doubles, two triples and 15 RBIs. He was also the top pitcher with an 8-2 record and a 2.01 earned run average. He struck out 101 and walked 16 batters.

Hurtado batted .329 with nine doubles, three triples, two home runs and 31 RBIs. As a pitcher, he had a 1-0 record with a 4.00 ERA, 10 strikeouts and seven walks.

Jiron had a .262 average with five doubles, three triples and 13 RBIs. He had a 5-3 pitching record with a 2.01 ERA, 55 strikeouts and 32 walks.

Baumgardner batted .276 with one double and 21 RBIs. Pitching-wise, he had a 2-0 record with a 2.27 ERA, 31 strikeouts and 17 walks.

Madrid batted .290 with eight doubles, one triple and 17 RBIs.

Monte Vista coach Luke Bradshaw was the Coach of the Year.

The Pirates went 19-5 overall and 11-0 in league play. They not only won the league, but a regional championship and advanced to the state tournament.

Del Norte had four selections. Nicolas Atencio and Gage Trujillo were both first team, and Tytus Atencio and Kelby Mondragon were second team.

Nicolas Atencio led the Tigers in batting with a .532 average with nine doubles, a triple and 20 RBIs. As a pitcher, he had a 2-4 record with a 1.52 ERA, 87 strikeouts and 18 walks.

Trujillo batted .352 with four doubles, a triple and 13 RBIs. His pitching record was 0-1 with a 5.73 ERA, nine strikeouts and six walks.

Tytus Atencio batted .520 with six doubles, two triples and 20 RBIs. He had a 2-0 record with a 2.47 ERA, 31 strikeouts and 18 walks.

Mondragon had a .460 batting average with five doubles, three triples and 21 RBIs. His pitching record was 1-1 with a 10.04 ERA, 18 strikeouts and 10 walks.

Del Norte had an 11-10 overall record and it was 10-4 in league play. The Tigers advanced to a regional tournament.

Sanford had two selections. Cash Caldon was first team and Trason Gartrell was second team.

Caldon batted .553 with five doubles, two triples and 25 RBIs. As a pitcher, he had a 2-3 record with am 11.09 ERA, 23 strikeouts and 17 walks.

Gartrell had a .500 batting average with nine doubles, three triples, one home run and 18 RBIs. Pitching-wise, we went 3-1 with an 11.05 ERA, 23 strikeouts and 29 walks.

The Mustangs were 12-8 overall and 6-5 in league play. They advanced to a regional tournament.

Center also had two All-League players. Nicholas Palma was first team and Riley Heater was second team.

Statistics were unavailable.

The Vikings had a 5-15 overall record and were 4-7 in league play.

Sargent had one All-League selection in Liam Ellithorpe who was second team. His statistics were unavailable.

The Farmers had a 5-15 overall record and were 5-9 in league play.
