Sargent School District promotes academic and sports accomplishments

SARGENT SCHOOL — Sargent School District recently shared some of the accomplishments of its students.

According to Trish Rue of Sargent School District, “Over the last couple of months, Sargent elementary, junior high and senior high students have participated in History Fair, Science Fair, FBLA Knowledge Bowl and FFA. Student-athletes have ended their basketball, swim and wrestling seasons and moved into baseball, junior high wrestling and track. ‘Small but mighty’ can be a motto for the Sargent School District.”

Sargent students participated in the Regional History Fair at Adams State University on Saturday, Jan. 29, and had 20 junior high students and seven senior high students compete. Twenty-one junior and senior high students qualified for the State History Fair Competition in Denver on April 30.

The Senior High School Knowledge Bowl Team qualified for the State Competition in January and participated in the State Competition on March 14 and 15. The state-qualifying team consisted of Mary Willis, Katherine Sewell, Chinmay Jayanty, Lindsey Temple and Jessica Buser who participated in the virtual event.

The Knowledge Bowl team consists of 18 students on the Junior Varsity and Varsity high school team. The Junior High School Knowledge Bowl team consists of 25 junior high students. Students participate in meets throughout the San Luis Valley and the Sargent Junior High Meet is on Thursday, March 31.

Sargent Junior High participated in the San Luis Valley Spelling Bee at Adams State University on Wednesday, Feb. 2. Tanner Houser, an eighth-grader, took first place as the San Luis Valley Spelling Bee Champion.

The Sargent High School Future Business Leaders (FBLA) participated in the District 8 Leadership Conference on Tuesday, Feb. 8, at Adams State University. All 28 members placed in the top 10 of varying events. Twenty-six members will travel to the State Leadership Conference at the Gaylord Resort in Denver on April 18 through 20.

Sargent High School Future Farmers of America (FFA) President Maddie Kyffin stated, “members will participate in the Regional CDE Competition in Lamar, Colo., on April 6, 2022. Members will participate in competitions such as livestock judging, floral culture, and ag marketing. I am excited to see FFA members demonstrate their knowledge and experience in these competitions.”

Sargent FFA has 46 members.

Sargent School District also participated in the San Luis Valley Regional Science Fair. Students in grades 4-12 participated in the virtual fair. Five elementary students received awards, with Parker Mitchell receiving the Colorado State Science and Engineering Fair Award allowing him to represent Sargent Elementary at the State Fair. Sophia Mitchell and Sydney Curtis won the 2022 Logo Contest Award.

Most of the junior and high students who participated received Science Fair Awards with Kyra Griffin, Addison Roepke, Dietrich Smith, Mackenzie Consaul, Will Walker, Kandace Pargin, Kimberly Pargin, Catie Deacon and Chinmay Jayanty will be representing Sargent Secondary at the State Colorado Science and Engineering Fair in Denver on April 7 and 8.

Sargent High School inducted seven new members to the National Honors Society chapter on Thursday, March 10, in the District Auditorium — Sydney Lorentzen, Annabelle Heinemann, Giovanni Aquilar, Brooke Hoffstaetter, Jordan Rockey, Parker Ford, and Daylon Maze.

Winter sports concluded with sophomore Trenton Lovelace placing fifth at the State Wrestling Tournament.

The Sargent swim team sent Katherine and Emma Sewell to the State Swim Meet. Sewell was honored as Swimmer of the Year for the South Central League for the 2021-2022 school year.

The girls basketball team advanced to the Regional Basketball Tournament.
