Center Viking Youth Club holds suicide awareness run

CENTER – A suicide awareness color run took place on Friday morning, Sept. 13. The race began at the Center Viking Youth Club, 386 S. Broadway, Center. The race involved students from the Center Consolidated School District, and all that attended either ran or walked back to the Center Viking Youth Club.

Farm Fresh Direct makes $5,000 donation to 4-H Juntos 

MONTE VISTA - The Colorado State University San Luis Valley Extension Office’s 4-H Juntos group recently made an overnight trip to Pueblo, for an exciting Discovery Day adventure Aug. 23 to 24. It would not have been possible without a generous $5,000 donation from Farm Fresh Direct.  

CAC’s Steamroller Printmaking Event is Sept. 21 

CREEDE - The Creede Arts Council is hosting its 5th annual Steamroller Printmaking Event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 21. This is an outdoor printmaking event held in Creede.  

Crestone Energy Fair lights up the town 

CRESTONE – In a two-day event that took place on Sept. 14 and 15, the Crestone Energy Fair brought positive energy and lit up the town. 
In remembrance of 9/11, a parade was held in Saguache. The Northern Saguache County Ambulance District was one of the participants. 

Saguache first responders hold 9/11 remembrance event 

SAGUACHE – On Sept. 11, first responders participated in a parade held on 4th Street in Saguache. The street was lined with people happily watching as the local fire and rescue trucks, Saguache County Sheriff trucks, and a Saguache County ambulance, drove down the street with their lights and sirens on, in remembrance of the 9/11 tragedy.   

Society Hall welcomes Nashville multi-instrumentalist Erik Stucky 

ALAMOSA – Society Hall is excited to bring Colorado native and multi-instrumentalist singer songwriter Erik Stucky to the stage. The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, at Society Hall, 400 Ross Ave., Alamosa.  

Adams State Homecoming events start Sept. 27 

ALAMOSA – The fun, free carnival returns during Adams State University Homecoming. The popular, community event begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, on the North Campus Green.

The Colorado Trail, an iconic 567-mile high-elevation trail that crosses the Rockies, owes its existence largely to Gudy Gaskill, a charismatic, six-foot-tall woman who could make tough things seem easy.

Conejos County deputy injured in accident, CSP reports
CONEJOS COUNTY — A collision between two cars on Wednesday afternoon led to a Conejos County deputy sustaining serious injuries and being transported to a local hospital. In the other vehicle, two young women from Alabama were injured, less seriously, and transported, as well. 
Saguache County residents Adam Kinney (left) and Pete Van Horn spent the weekend of September 7-8 hiking and climbing 14,087-foot Challenger Point in the Sangre de Cristo Range. The mountain was named Challenger by the USGS Board of Geographic Names in 1987 in memory of the crew of the Space Shuttle Challenger who perished in 1986.

ALAMOSA — A 10-month-old baby was found deceased on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 14. The Alamosa Police Department is conducting an investigation to determine the infant’s cause of death.

ALAMOSA – Longtime San Luis Valley newspaper publisher Keith Cerny will be honored with a retirement party Friday, Sept. 20 from 4-6 p.m. on the patio of Knee Knockers restaurant at Cattails Golf Course.

ALAMOSA – In just two years since earning her B.A. in political science from Adams State, Courtney Hocking ’22 is making impressive progress toward her goal of working in international relations. She will receive the Adams State 2024 Exceptional New Alumna Award at the Homecoming Banquet on Sept. 27.

Richard Earl Baker 
Richard Earl Baker, a cherished husband, brother, and friend, passed away on September 6, 2024, at the age of 80, at the Rio Grande Hospital, in the peaceful town of Del Norte, Colo. Born on May 4, 1944, in Muscatine, Iowa, Richard grew up with a spirit of adventure and a heart full of kindness that would define his entire life. 
William Ernest Pearcy 
William Ernest Pearcy left this earth peacefully on Aug. 27, 2024, surrounded by his daughters, in Loganville, Ga., after suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for the past 10 years. William (“Bill”) was born April 27, 1940, in Pueblo, Colo., to Earl and Florence Pearcy. 
Frances Margaret Kolisch 
Frances Margaret Kolisch, 74, of Creede, Colo., passed away surrounded by loved ones on Aug. 3, 2024. She was born on July 29, 1950, and grew up in South Fork, Colo. Frances made Creede her home in 1970 and quickly became a valued member of the community.

It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of our Beloved Lucille B. Garcia. Lucille was called home on July 29, 2024. She passed away at home with her loving family by her side. Lucille was welcomed into the world on March 2, 1955, in Del Norte, Colo., the daughter of Jose V. Martinez and Manuelita A. (Manzanares) Martinez. 
Kenneth George Teunis
Kenneth George Teunis, 94, of Creede, Colo., passed away peacefully on Aug. 10, 2024. Born on June 3, 1930, in Grand Rapids, Mich., Kenneth was a man whose warmth and friendliness touched the lives of many. Kenneth's journey led him from the place of his birth, through California, and to the scenic expanses of Creede, where he embraced the community and its natural beauty.
