SdC lone Valley survivor following volleyball regionals

SAN LUIS VALLEY— Friday saw a host of action for the teams in the San Luis Valley. Centauri and Alamosa fell in regional play as their respective pools were taken by Platte Valley and Sterling.
Del Norte traveled to Fowler to face off against the strength of District 6, Swink and Fowler. The Tigers fell to both and closed out their day 0-2 and will likely be looking to next year for their next opportunity.
On Saturday, three teams from the Valley went to regional play: Sargent, Sangre de Cristo and Creede. Sargent played host in their tri to the Custer County Bobcats and Hoehne Farmers. Both Farmer teams knocked off the Bobcats in the first two games meaning the third game of the tri was for all the marbles. Sargent fell behind in the point and set count eventually falling 3 sets to 0. Going 1-1 in pool play.
Creede’s pool included the De Beque Dragons and La Veta High School. The Miners got off on the wrong foot falling 3-0 to La Veta in the Saturday’s first match. They did their part knocking off the Dragons in the second match but the most they could do was watch as La Veta also took De Beque apart winning the tri 2-0 and advancing to the quarterfinals.
In 2A/1A the first eight teams for both classes have been selected but Del Norte, Creede and Sargent waited until Monday as the RPI update would be deciding the final eight teams to advance via a wildcard. Monday yielded no good news and the three schools will have to look to next year.
Sangre de Cristo compiled a strong season with a 19-6 overall record. For the postseason the Thunderbirds traveled to the westernmost border of Colorado to faceoff against the likes of Dove Creek and Nucla. The Thunderbirds were assigned matches two and three. After watching Dove Creek defeat Nucla in five sets they took the court and did the same, in four. Sangre de Cristo followed that up with a second victory over Dove Creek to clear regionals and prepare for state.
Sangre de Cristo will be traveling up to Denver for State pool play in the Denver Colosseum. The Thunderbirds will face off against league rival La Veta on Friday, Nov. 10 and Wiley High School on Saturday, Nov. 11.
