Saguache jail break ends in capture

SAGUACHE — A prisoner who escaped from Saguache County Jail the evening of Nov. 21 was able to elude deputies for nearly a day before turning up in Chaffee County.

Levi Powers, originally from Center, disappeared from the Saguache County Jail at 8 p.m. Tuesday, shed his orange jail jumpsuit, and was later spotted along Highway 285 wearing a dark hoody and other dark clothing. Sheriff Dan Warwick says he believes Powers took them off a scarecrow along the road.

Deputies pursued Powers throughout the town but he stayed one step ahead. He was seen in a local store then hitchhiking along Highway 285. It was thought he was headed to Colorado Springs, where he had been staying before his arrest on domestic violence charges.

Powers was last seen between Alamosa and Monte Vista, after being picked up hitchhiking by a woman in Saguache.

At 3:30 p.m. Nov. 22, Saguache County Sheriff's Office reported that Chaffee County called to let them know Powers was in their custody.
