Saguache County fire damages residence, burns hay

SAGUACHE — A residence fire on County Road 48 at the junction of county roads X and Y damaged a home and spread to a nearby haystack, which burned all night last Friday, June 19, as firefighters stood watch to put out any hotspots.

The blaze began sometime between noon and 1 p.m. Friday, Jail Captain Ken Wilson said. Firefighters from neighboring counties were called in to help fight the blaze.

“The smoke hasn’t even cleared yet,” Wilson said late Friday afternoon. The smoke from the fire could be seen from the Sheriff’s Office.

A visiting pastor distributing Bibles to jail inmates first spotted the smoke when going to her vehicle and reported it to the Sheriff’s Office. After that, calls began coming into dispatch to report the fire, Wilson noted.

The residence fire was extinguished but the extent of damages was unknown as of Monday, June 22, Wilson said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
