SAGUACHE— Kenneth Alfred Lambert (Ken), 96, of Saguache passed away on Aug. 2, 2017. He was born on Feb. 3, 1921 in Mancos, Colo., to William Joseph and Mamie Alfereta Lambert.
Sometime around the late 1920s the entire family moved to Saguache where they had a sawmill business. They logged and sawmilled mostly on the Cochetopa Pass area. On Nov. 14, 1940 he married Ellen Lavonne (Bonnie) Arnold. The couple was blessed with two children Kenneth W. Lambert and Ellen M. Moores. In January 1944 while his children were only 3 ½ years old and 14 months old Ken entered into the United States Army. He served during WW2 and spent most of his service time in the Pacific theater. Ken and Bonnie moved to Gunnison area around late 1957, so Ken could work could work for Gunnison Mining Company. In 1963 after their children were raised and they already had five grandchildren the couple moved back to Saguache where they purchased their own sawmill and went into business for themselves. It was a good life together until Bonnie became ill with cancer and passed away in early 1973. He married Patricia Shores in late 1974. Patricia (Pat) passed away in 2000.
Ken loved the outdoors and his favorite past times were hunting, fishing and especially looking for arrowheads. He loved anything in nature and could be seen feeding rabbits out of his hands, talking to birds and deer. If you were in the mountains with him he would always point out specific landmarks and interesting formations. You could say he knew the hills west and north of Saguache like the back of his hand. In his later life he spent his time working at the Pitkin Avenue Baptist Church, feeding any stray cat that showed up at his house and getting the mail.
