CENTER — According to a news release Monday, at about 2 a.m. last Saturday, Center Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fire at 711 Wills Street. The Del Norte Volunteer Fire Department also assisted in extinguishing the blaze.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time until the fire chief and/or insurance adjuster completes their investigation. The home was heated with wood.
Five adult occupants and two infants were sleeping in the home when smoke detectors sounded the alarm. Sobieda Moreno heard the detectors go off and alerted the rest of the family. All were able to escape with only minor injuries.
One female experienced heat injuries and a male occupant received stitches in his head from an injury which occurred while he helped the female and children escape through a window.
The home that burned has been in the Trujillo family for generations. It is a total loss. Saguache County Treasurer Connie Trujillo stated that she as well as all other family members “are so very thankful that although the home and possessions are lost, we have all of our family.
“We are so very appreciative to Center and Del Norte Fire and EMS, Center Police Department, the Town of Center, and all the wonderful community members for their help.”
