Center Football with COVID-19

Before injuries depleted their roster, the Center Vikings had a strong running game against Ignacio, threatening the endzone early in the game.

CENTER — With five — then four — substitutes on Oct. 15, the Center football team battled back from a three-touchdown deficit but ultimately lost 27–18 to the visiting Bobcats from Ignacio.


Beyond the Center Community Field sidelines, fans, officials, cheerleaders and staff complied with COVID-19 regulations throughout the game. Cars surrounded the stadium with supporters who honked approval and flashed lights for special plays. Bobcat fans numbered nearly 30 in the east stands, and the socially-distanced Center fans on the west side dispersed among the bleachers. Game officials also wore masks when they gathered to discuss calls.


The loss drops the Vikings to 0–2 in 1A Southern Peaks league play. Up next, they’ll travel to Monte Vista Friday, Oct. 23, to face the league leaders at 7 p.m. Now 1-1, the Pirates beat the Del Norte Tigers 48–0 last Friday. Center will host the winless Tigers on Oct. 29.
